Carly Rae Jepsen is still the ‘Call Me Maybe’ singer, but what’s wrong with that?

Canadian popstar has a career in which he tries to disassociate himself from the only hit of his career, but the show at Primavera Sound proved the full strength of the hit, even with a good repertoire of cheesy pop. Carly Rae Jepsen rocks the Primavera Sound audience with “Call Me Maybe” For two hundred excited fans who squeezed through the railing, Carly Rae Jepsen is a pop star with an indie soul, a wronged diva too good for the charts. For most people who still arrived at the Primavera Sound festival, however, Carly is still the voice of “Call Me Maybe”, the 38-year-old Canadian singer’s only hit. No song has been as sung as this 2012 pop anthem, of course. She faced 30ºC at the Autódromo de Interlagos, in São Paulo, with a sunny and fun pop. The show is simple, but with beautiful effects, like golden shredded paper in “Run away with me”. On stage, she is accompanied by a full band (bassist, guitarist, keyboardist and drummer). In some parts, like the naughty “Want You in My Room”, the two backing vocals sing and dance with her. Everything is a bit cheesy, the saxophone is there to prove it, but in the best of ways. Anyone who isn’t moved by a good saxophone solo is dead inside. The repertoire, closed by the delicious “Cut to the Feeling”, is highly engaging and well sung. After all, Carly is no newcomer, she was already a child star and competed in a freshman reality show. Carly Rae Jepsen went from the pop farofa ‘Call Me Maybe’ to the ‘cult’ world thanks to failures in her career In “Kollage“, she parades well-calibrated high notes. In “I Really Like You“, the less electronic and more pop rock arrangement works beautifully. The song is much, much better live than the studio version. Loose on stage, walking smiling back and forth in the insistent sun of the race track, Carly is at peace with her career choices. A career without as many fans as anyone imagined it would have when it emerged more than 10 years ago, but certainly with some new admirers after this December afternoon.
