Carlos Jordy: PF and Moraes put Bolsonarism under pressure – 01/18/2024 – Power

A new phase of Operation Lesa Pátria, launched this Thursday (18), brought to the Bolsonarist political circle an arm of the investigations into January 8th.

One of the main opposition leaders in Congress, deputy Carlos Jordy (PL-RJ) was the target of searches by the Federal Police this Thursday (18) in an investigation aimed at identifying people who planned, financed and incited the January 8th attacks on headquarters of the three Powers.

The previous phases of the operation had targeted little-known militants of Bolsonarism, such as businesspeople from rural cities, without approaching exponents linked to the previous government.

Some of the opponents of former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL) have criticized the fact that, a year after the depredation in Brasília, high-ranking members of his political group were not denounced in the investigation of the coup attacks.

This Thursday’s action was authorized by the STF (Supreme Federal Court), where the investigation is being processed under the report of Minister Alexandre de Moraes, following a request from the PF, with a favorable opinion from the PGR (Attorney General’s Office).

Federal agents carried out ten search warrants in Rio de Janeiro (8) and the Federal District (2) against the parliamentarian and nine others being investigated. There was even action inside the deputy’s office in the Chamber.

This Thursday, Jordy gave a statement to the PF, in Rio de Janeiro. After the action was launched, the parliamentarian stated that he was the victim of an “authoritarian measure, without foundation, without any evidence, which only aims to persecute, intimidate and create a narrative on the eve of a municipal election”.

In his decision, the minister authorized, in addition to the searches, the breaking of the telephone and telematic confidentiality of the seized devices, as well as emails and social media accounts and messaging applications.

The current phase of Lesa Pátria seeks, according to the PF, to identify those responsible for blocking highways and camps around Armed Forces barracks after the election.

Launched days after the acts of vandalism at the headquarters of the Powers, Lesa Pátria became permanent, with periodic updates on the number of court warrants issued, people captured and fugitives.

This is the 24th phase of the operation, which has already served 97 preventive arrest warrants and 313 search and seizure warrants.

Throughout the first year of Lesa Pátria, Alexandre de Moraes gave 255 decisions authorizing search and seizure measures carried out by the PF in more than 400 addresses and 350 dealt with breaches of banking and telematic secrecy.

Last week, a report from Sheet showed that Moraes cites cases of congressmen investigated in their votes for the conviction of January 8 defendants to justify maintaining in court the cases of those who do not have the right to a special forum in the court.

However, between May and August last year, the PGR requested the shelving, due to lack of evidence, of the investigations opened against deputies André Fernandes (PL-CE), Clarissa Tércio (PP-PE) and Silvia Waiãpi (PL-AP) , in addition to an investigation into the conduct of Corporal Gilberto Silva (PL-PB) — parliamentarians who are mentioned by the minister in his votes.

Bolsonaro leaders, such as the former president’s sons and the president of the PL, Valdemar Costa Neto, came to their colleague’s defense, speaking of an authoritarian measure from the courts.

Suspicions related to Carlos Jordy include anti-democratic events that took place in Rio de Janeiro, including camps in front of Armed Forces barracks and road blocks, after the 2022 elections.

With Lula’s (PT) victory, Bolsonaro’s supporters promoted a series of protests across the country, blocking roads, and began to gather in front of military units, where they expressed their disagreement with the results of the polls.

For investigators, these episodes served as a kind of preparation for the attack that would take place on January 8 last year.

Moraes authorized the searches and seizures against Jordy motivated by phone calls and messages from someone being investigated for organizing coup acts in Campos dos Goytacazes (RJ).

According to the PF, based on information obtained in previous phases of the operation, evidence of “strong links” between the deputy councilor of Campos Carlos Victor de Carvalho, known as CVC, and Jordy were discovered.

Carlos Victor organized at least 15 WhatsApp groups with messages of coup content, in addition to anti-democratic demonstrations.

According to the PF, there are indications that Jordy guided CVC and “had the power to order anti-democratic movements, whether through social media or stirring up militancy in the region.”

To do this, they cited a message from CVC to the deputy on November 1, 2022, when highway blockades were taking place throughout Brazil after Lula’s victory in the race for the Presidency.

“Good morning, my leader. What direction can you give me? You have the power to stop everything”, CVC said to Jordi.

The deputy replied: “Say brother, okay? Are you able to speak?”

CVC then said: “I can, brother. You can call me whenever you want.”

On January 17, 2023, when CVC was at large, Jordy made telephone contact with the alternate councilor.

The PGR stated that the evidence indicates that Jordy, “in addition to guiding a significant group of people, had the power to order anti-democratic movements, whether through social media or by stirring up militancy in the region.”

The deputy is a pre-candidate for Mayor of Niterói (RJ), a city in which he was once a councilor. He was chosen to lead the opposition in the Chamber in early 2023.

Deputy investigated denies that he is an organizer of acts

Carlos Jordy denied this Thursday that he was a mentor or organizer of January 8th or roadblocks.

To journalists, when he gave a statement in Rio de Janeiro, he said: “I never encouraged it, I never financed it — much less financed it. I have no relationship whatsoever with January 8th. I have no relationship whatsoever with any of those people who went to the barracks. generals.”

Previously, on social media, Jordy had also stated: “The cowardice carried out today is symptomatic. We are in a dictatorship that distorts and manipulates facts to persecute opponents. May God watch over Brazil!”

He said that he was woken up “with a rifle in his face by the Federal Police” and that he handed over the gun he had at home. “They tried to look for other things that could incriminate me, but they found nothing.”

The parliamentarian also stated that at no time did he incite or support acts or post on social media about these protests, but stated that he said that people had the right to “demonstrate against the elected government”.

Jordy also stated that he is the victim of an attempted political persecution, with a totalitarian bias and without legal support. Without mentioning Alexandre de Moraes, he criticized “a person who thinks he owns Brazil”.
