Carlos Gomes will coordinate the Rio Grande do Sul bench in Brasília

The gaucho bench in the National Congress will rotate its coordination among the parties with the most parliamentarians. Therefore, PT/PCdoB/PV (federation), PL, REP and PP will appoint leaders until 2026. Also, PSDB/Cidadania (federation), MDB, PDT and Podemos, respectively fifth to eighth parties with more deputies, will appoint deputy coordinators.

In this first in the new format, federal deputy Carlos Gomes (REP) will be the coordinator of the Gauchos in Brasília and first-term federal deputy Any Ortiz (Cidadania) will be assistant coordinator.

The PT, whose federation has seven federal deputies and Senator Paulo Paim, gave up the first year of the new agreement. Federal deputy Dionilson Marcon (PT) will be the leader of the Rio Grande do Sul bench in 2024.

The Republicans of Carlos Gomes has three federal deputies and senator Hamilton Mourão, former vice president of the Republic.

The PL has four parliamentarians in the Federal Chamber and should appoint deputy Marcelo Moraes to coordinate the bench in 2025. The PP, with three deputies and Senator Luis Carlos Heinze, will still define its leader nomination for the year 2026.

The agreement for the relay of leaders had been sewn behind the scenes since deputy Giovani Cherini (PL), coordinator of the Rio Grande do Sul bench for eight years, announced that he would not make his name available to be re-elected to the position.

Before the sewing was completed, Carlos Gomes and Marcon were disputing the post. Finally, in a meeting that lasted about two hours in Annex 2 of the Chamber of Deputies, the representatives of the gauchos decided on rotation.

“I think the objective is to bring the State even closer to meet the main demands that the State needs. The biggest one is to help the State government to seek resources for this great drought that we have had. We will also monitor the execution of the amendments of bench, which are great deliveries to the municipalities”, stated Gomes.

Marcon stated that the agreement sought to unite the Gaucho parliamentarians. “I think I had a vote to win. But I think we had to unite the bench. We have many agendas to touch and urgently”, said the deputy.
