Carille should surpass numbers from his 1st spell at Santos

Fábio Carille will not have an easy life in charge of Santos in 2024. With only Paulistão and Série B of the Brazilian Championship ahead, the priority is clear: returning to the national elite. To do this, however, the coach will have to surpass the performance of his first spell at Vila Belmiro, between 2021 and 2022.
Last time in charge of the black and white team, Carille was in the technical area on 27 occasions. There were nine wins, ten draws and eight defeats, totaling 46% success. By assuming the responsibility left by Fernando Diniz, he was successful in avoiding the club’s relegation in the 2021 Brasileirão, but ended up being dismissed due to the irregular campaign in the following year’s Paulistão.
“My problem was Dracena (then football director), let’s not talk too much about it. He didn’t want me. Santos ended the year well, there was an appeal from the fans for me to follow. But he didn’t want to. We don’t have any more Let’s talk about that. I didn’t fight with him at any point, but he didn’t want me”, recalled Carille in his recent return to the São Paulo club.
Past performance is also insufficient to ensure Santos’ promotion to the first division. Considering the last ten editions (2014-2023) of Series B, it is necessary to reach around 63 points to finish the 38th round within the G-4. This number represents an average success rate of 55%, well above that achieved by Carille when he previously led the team.
During the decade, Goiás stands out as the team that needed the lowest score (60) to guarantee a place in Series A, in 2018. On the other hand, América-MG, in 2015, established the highest score among teams which rose, totaling 65 points.

2014 – Avaí: 62 points
2015 – América-MG: 65 points
2016 – Bahia: 63 points
2017 – Paraná: 64 points
2018 – Goiás: 60 points
2019 – Atlético-GO: 62 points
2020 – Cuiabá: 61 points
