Among certain audiences, such as patients and entrepreneurs mainly, the Cannabis It is recognized as an important therapeutic resource and raw material with high industrial potential. In major countries, such as the USA and Canada, the plant has become a commodity, just like soybeans and oranges. It is a raw material with the capacity to generate US$166 billion in the formal economy by 2025, according to the international consultancy Euromonitor.

Many, however, have no idea of the more than 25 thousand industrial applications – ranging from construction to weaving. Misinformation comes up against the prejudice of those who still have marijuana as their only reference, a drug that enters the country illegally. With the intention of clarifying and breaking paradigms, in Brasília, the Chamber of Deputies hosted an exhibition on the topic this week.

The subject was hemp, a type of Cannabis with such a low amount of THC (Tetrahydrocannabidiol, psychoactive substance), that it is not used as a narcotic, but serves very well in industry and medicine. With the title “Hemp: a non-psychoactive agricultural revolution”, the exhibition brought together many products derived from the plant, including bricks, clothing and olive oil.

Choosing the Chamber of Deputies for the event was an important milestone, taking into account the appropriate proportions, such as bringing to the UN (United Nations) an event of Cannabis, last year. These events send a clear message that the plant is part of a healthy and formal market that came to bring more jobs, more money and development to the country.

The exhibition has already passed through the Legislative Chamber and the University of Brasília, in addition to specific events in the sector, such as Cannabis Thinking, which promotes the innovation market. Organized by the InformaCann institute, the exhibition was supported by parliamentarians from the house, such as federal deputy Carol Dartora (PT/RS), Sâmia Bomfim (Psol/SP) and Luciano Ducci (PSB/PR), who was the rapporteur of PL 399- 2015, on the regulation and cultivation of hemp for medicinal and industrial purposes. Many deputies insisted on attending, such as Kim Kataguiri (União Brasil – SP).

As expected, not everyone welcomed the event. Marcos Pollon (PL-MS), for example, registered his discontent on Instagram, but distorted the facts, calling the exhibition a “marijuana promotion stand”. “Look how absurd,” he says in the video. “And there are people imprisoned for the destruction of the country’s democracy”. the legal cultivation market, which has nothing to do with marijuana. Hemp is not marijuana, but a new economy arriving here but waiting for regularization to grow in Brazil.
