Candidate for Attorney General of SP schedules mass – 04/09/2024 – Panel

Attorney José Carlos Bonilha scheduled a mass so that “the best choice can be made when electing the position of Attorney General of Justice” at the Public Ministry of São Paulo, according to the invitation he has sent to colleagues. Bonilha is one of the candidates.

The religious meeting was scheduled for Friday (12), at the São José parish, in Jardim Europa, a neighborhood in the west of the capital, one day before the vote.

He tells the Panel that he is a practicing Catholic and that the church he attends will celebrate mass “for the good of the Public Prosecutor’s Office”, without any mention of any candidacy or even his name during the meeting.

“There will never be any use of the church or religion to benefit anyone. But as we believe in God and attend church, this mass is so that there is the best result for the Public Ministry institution”, says Bonilha.

The election will determine the triple list that will be forwarded to governor Tarcísio de Freitas (Republicans), who will then choose the successor of Mário Luiz Sarrubbo, who assumed the role of national secretary of Public Security in the Lula (PT) government.

Sarrubbo supports candidates José Carlos Cosenzo and Paulo Sérgio de Oliveira e Costa. Bonilha and Antônio da Ponte are the names of the opposition. Voting is mandatory for the approximately 2,000 members of the institution.

In his presentation letter, Bonilha states that his objective is to free the Attorney General’s Office from “‘fads’ and agendas of a purely ideological nature, eliminating the condition of submission to the demands presented by activists who claim to represent minorities”.

Regarding this topic, he tells the column that these agendas often do not coincide with the “genuine concerns of society”. As an example of recent measures that the PGJ would have taken in this regard, Bonilha cites direct actions of unconstitutionality against municipal laws that provide for the mention of God at the beginning of sessions of the Chambers of São Paulo.

“It’s not a priority for society. If you ask a citizen if their life improved after the Public Prosecutor’s Office managed to have the law declared unconstitutional, they’ll say it didn’t make any difference,” says the prosecutor.

Furthermore, he also states that he intends to emphasize the internal democratization of the MP-SP and the expansion of home office.
