Campos Neto’s speech about BC autonomy generates discomfort – 03/04/2024 – Panel

The statements by the president of the Central Bank, Roberto Campos Neto, to Folha about a meeting with Minister Fernando Haddad (Finance) to discuss the amendment that expands the autonomy of the monetary authority generated uneasiness with the economic team.
Campos Neto and Haddad spoke again last Friday (1st), after the dialogue between them was interrupted precisely because of the BC president’s decision to articulate the PEC (Constitutional Amendment Proposal) on the topic in Congress.
Shortly after the meeting, Campos Neto gave an interview to Sheet and said he tried to “give comfort” to the Minister of Finance that nothing would be done without his knowledge.
The statements caused tension with the Ministry of Finance. This is because Haddad had asked Campos Neto not to address the issue before the minister spoke to President Lula (PT) about the issue.
The amendment would guarantee financial autonomy to the BC, in addition to the operational autonomy currently guaranteed by legislation. The measure is opposed by broad sectors of the PT, however.
