The Minister of Education, Camilo Santana, said this Wednesday (12) that the recent attacks on schools are reflections of the stimulus to hatred, violence and weapons present in society. He defended discussing what measures can be taken, but he was against the idea of ​​putting armed police in schools.

The minister said that the country and the world are experiencing a systematic problem.

“It’s not a simple problem. What’s happening in schools reflects what’s happening in our society, encouraging hatred, violence, weapons,” he said. “arm [seria a solução]? Let’s discuss. Because the United States did that and research showed that it didn’t solve it. This is a problem we need to discuss more deeply, we need to strengthen a great psychosocial program.”

Arguing that putting armed police in schools would not solve the problem, Santana highlighted the fact that the attack in Blumenau (SC), which left four children dead last week, took place in a private school, which would have been able to place private guards.

The minister was applauded at the end of his speech on the subject.

The case in Blumenau occurred nine days after the attack on the Thomazia Montoro state school, in São Paulo, when a 13-year-old student stabbed a teacher to death and injured five other people, including three teachers.

Minister was called to the Chamber to deal with the federal program of civic-military schools, a policy created by the Jair Bolsonaro (PL) government and whose board at MEC (Ministry of Education) was extinguished in this administration.

The minister was questioned by Deputy Paulo Bilynskyj (PL-SP), who defended the maintenance of these schools and defended the presence of armed agents in the units, foreseen in the model, as a way of combating attacks. He even criticized Camilo for not mentioning the topic in his opening speech.

Despite extinguishing the board of civic-military schools of the MEC, the folder has not yet revoked the decree that created this policy. Santana said that his team is evaluating the future of this issue, especially with regard to schools that have already been promoted, but he stressed that this is not part of the government’s political vision.

“This program was created by decree, it was not by law, it did not go through Congress, it was a unilateral creation of the last government. In the Law of Guidelines and Bases of Education, which is law, in the PNE [Plano Nacional de Educação]which is law, there is no mention of the strategy of including the armed forces in basic education in that country.” The project provides for the MEC to pay agents to work in schools.

At the same meeting, the minister announced this Wednesday (12) that the Lula government (PT) will edit a provisional measure to unblock 3,527 works stopped in the area. The management foresees an investment of R$ 6 billion.
