Camilo Cristófaro must escape impeachment for racist speech after acquittal in court – 07/16/2023 – Panel

The acquittal of councilor Camilo Cristófaro (Avante) from the accusation of racism in the São Paulo Court should influence him to also get rid of the impeachment in the City Council. This is what the councilors of the House Internal Affairs say, which will judge the case on August 24th.
The Corregedoria has seven members, some still undecided about the vote. The trend now, they assess, is that they take a stand for the temporary suspension of the mandate. The recommendation of the Corregedoria will then be voted on in plenary by the 55 councillors.
On May 3 of last year, the councilor was caught in a CPI session at the City Council saying “they didn’t wash the sidewalk, it’s a black thing”.
On the day, the meeting was interrupted after the sentence was heard in the sound system of the Chamber. With the repercussions of the case, the Public Ministry of São Paulo denounced the councilor to Justice.
In a decision published on Thursday (13), Judge Fábio Aguiar Munhoz understood that the councilor’s speech was taken from a context of “joke, joke, but never from a context of segregation, discrimination or anything like that”. . The decision is at first instance, and the Public Prosecutor’s Office may appeal.
