Calçoene manager describes the destruction at Praia do Goiabal – News of Brazil

The mayor of Calçoene, Reinaldo Barros (PDT), at the beginning of the night of this Tuesday, 31, in the program ‘Meeting Point’ (Diary 90.9)over the phone, described a scene of destruction at Praia do Goiabal, the only resort in Amapa bathed by the Atlantic Ocean.
The first information about the region showed that the beach was isolated from the rest of the municipality of Calçoene, due to the flood that had taken over the branch that leads to the coast due to the overflow of the Lakes Region by rainwater.
Teams from Setrap and Dnit visited the site and observed that technically the immediate solution to the problem would be the construction of a wooden bridge extending from 40 to 150 meters. The construction would make it possible to reach Praia do Goiabal.
Today, with the mayor’s report, came the understanding that Praia do Goiabal, in fact, is attacked on two natural fronts. From the interior of the municipality, with the accession of the branch by the fresh waters of the Lagos Region, and by the salty waters of the ocean.
Reinaldo Barros informed that the existing vegetation on the beach and the protection of sand, which he calls silting up, were totally destroyed by the force of the salt waters of the Atlantic and that, as a result, the entire bathing structure of the place also went down.
“Today there is nothing of that structure in Praia do Goiabal anymore, everything was destroyed. We depend on the government. We need help, someone to give us technical guidance to save Praia do Goiabal. The force of nature destroyed everything.” appealed to the mayor, implying that even so there are still people living in the place, because he informed that so far only three families have been relocated from there.

In the same interview, mayor Reinaldo Barros made good comments about the mining that operates in the district of Lourenço. According to him, if it weren’t for the gold that is extracted in the village, there would be no way for the municipality to support the approximately three hundred families that live there.
Reinaldo revealed that the gold from Lourenço, extracted by a cooperative of garimpeiros, abbreviated Coogal, until recently came to give R$ 75 thousand in royalties to the Municipality of Calçoene, but that today, due to problems, one of them the fall of the price of the ore in the market, the collection reaches only R$ 25 thousand.
Fishing
The mayor explained that Calçoene, a fishing municipality, does not take off with this activity because it does not have a bank to intermediate the commercial transactions of large fishermen from other states that reach the oceanic coast.
Even so, according to Reinaldo Barros, fishing, with all the loss that Calçoene suffers with it, is still important for the economy, because good or bad it leaves something in the municipality.
