Caixa cancels cultural exhibition that showed Lira, Damares and Guedes in a trash can

Caixa Cultural decided this Monday (23) to cancel the exhibition “O shout!” which showed, among its images, the president of the Chamber, Arthur Lira (PP-AL), senator Damares Alves (Republicanos-DF) and the former Minister of Economy Paulo Guedes inside a trash basket covered by the Brazilian flag. The exhibition began on the 17th and would run until December 17th of this year.

The “Flag Collection”, by artist Marilia Scarabello, shows a large collage with several stylized Brazilian flags and other figures. “I have been collecting images of manipulated Brazilian flags since 2016. From this collection I take material to feed the ‘flag’ work, which grows as I find a new motto inserted within the Brazilian flag”, says the artist in her portfolio about the work .

Among the images in the “Bandeira Collection” is a drawing of a man who appears to be former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL), crouched down, with a cell phone in his hands, without pants and defecating on the Brazilian flag. The image can be seen on the Instagram account with the collages of the work, here. One of the drawings that make up the work reads “mostronaro” and another “Pátria má Brasil”.

The cancellation of the exhibition was announced after the portal Power360 publicize the content of the work. After the repercussion, Caixa Econômica Federal announced, in a note sent to the Power360which decided to suspend the exhibition due to identifying “in the work in question a manifestation with a political bias, which violates the program guidelines, Caixa decided to suspend the aforementioned exhibition”.

When announcing the start of the event, Caixa Cultural informed that “the exhibition proposes narratives built on the 7th of September that translate multifaceted perspectives beyond the official discourse of history on the Declaration of Independence of Brazil”.

“In languages ​​such as painting, drawing, photography, sculpture, collage, video art and installation, the works highlight the role of artists as visual thinkers and are characterized by an analysis of events, provoking critical readings about the legacy of the colonial period in the construction of identity Brazilian national”, said the entity. Visiting was recommended for people over 16 years of age and entry was free.

According to the state bank, the exhibition “O shout!” was selected within the scope of the Caixa Cultural Space Occupation Program 2023/2024, “public selection model for cultural projects that are sponsored to occupy the bank’s spaces”.
