The governor of Goiás, Ronaldo Caiado (União Brasil), defended an “amnesty” for former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL) and military personnel accused of an alleged coup attempt. According to the governor, the measure is necessary to “calm the country”. Bolsonaro and his allies are targets of Operation Tempus Veritatis, launched earlier this month by the Federal Police.
“We must listen to the lesson of Juscelino Kubitschek, who was the target of a real coup attempt. And JK later amnestied everyone involved. I think that, now, we should also seek amnesty. We need to calm the country and fight for a political climate of peaceful coexistence”, said the governor in an interview with the newspaper Economic value this Thursday (22).
Caiado made reference to the coup attempt faced by Juscelino Kubitschek and his deputy, João Goulart, shortly after the election in 1955. At the time, the then interim president, Carlos Luz, with the support of some military personnel, intended to prevent the elected ticket from taking office. The coup attempt was demobilized with the help of General Henrique Lott. After the episode, Kubitschek forgave the putschists.
“It cannot be attributed to him [Bolsonaro] all those crimes, because they were not put into practice… If there were intentions [de golpe], for the Court to analyze. Pre-judgment is very bad,” Caiado told Value. In the past, Caiado stated that he would accept running for president of the Republic in 2026. At the time, he said that he would seek Bolsonaro’s support if this “dream” came true. The former president was declared ineligible for eight years by the Superior Electoral Court (TSE).
The governor of Goiás confirmed his presence at the event in support of Bolsonaro scheduled for the 25th, on Avenida Paulista. Two other governors are also expected to attend: Tarcísio de Freitas (São Paulo) and Jorginho Melo (Santa Catarina).
