The Chinese BYD, which is building an electric car factory in Bahia, and Raízen Power, an arm of Raízen focused on renewable electrical energy solutions, have signed a partnership to build around 600 charging stations at Shell stations over the next three years, in eight capitals.

The spaces will begin to be implemented from this year in the cities of São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Belo Horizonte, Brasília, Curitiba, Florianópolis, Salvador and Belém.

Supply infrastructure is one of the most sensitive problems facing the sector, especially in Brazil, which has continental dimensions. Today there are around 3,800 charging stations in Brazilian territory, a figure considered insufficient to handle the expected expansion of the market.

The agreement between BYD and Raízen aims to meet part of this demand, but it is also a strategy for both companies. This is because BYD, which already sells its vehicles in Brazil, is building a factory in the Northeast and, between the end of this year and 2025 (according to the company’s forecast), it will start producing national electric cars.

Therefore, building charging stations is an investment in infrastructure to improve the experience of current and potential future customers as well. In addition, the brand’s consumers will have discounts at charging points in the eight cities.

Raízen wants, through the Shell Recharge program, to lead the electromobility market, reaching around 25% of market share in the segment. The brand also intends to reach a 10% share in the free energy market and significantly increase its distributed generation projects.

“We believe it is crucial to have a robust and widely distributed charging infrastructure. As we embark on our ambitious sales expansion plan, it is essential to invest in charging infrastructure,” commented Stella Li, Executive Vice President of BYD and CEO of BYD Americas.
