“Amazonas for the Promotion of Racial Equality” and establishes educational campaigns to combat racism

Manaus (AM) – In addition to vehemently repudiating the racist attacks suffered by the Brazilian player for Real Madrid, Vinícius Júnior, state deputy Roberto Cidade (UB), president of the Legislative Assembly of Amazonas (Aleam), draws attention to laws he authored that aim to raise awareness of people about racial respect.

Among them, the parliamentarian highlights Law nº 5.620/2021, which created the seal “Amazonas pela Promoção da Equality Racial” (Amazon for the Promotion of Racial Equality) and establishes the implementation of educational campaigns to combat racism in schools and cultural events.

“We can no longer admit that, these days, acts of racism like the one suffered by Vinícius Junior are still witnessed, but, more than repudiating this regrettable act, what I want is to help so that people are more aware that the What happened is a crime. As in Spain, racial discrimination is still a sad reality in Brazil. Our law was born from the need to fight racial discrimination from an early age, from the need to teach children, from a young age, that we are all equal and deserve respect”, said the parliamentarian.

Law nº 5.620/2021 establishes that the campaign is permanent and that it is also carried out in sporting and cultural events of the State, with the dissemination of videos or reproduction of audios with content to combat racism, information leaflets and announcements in the sound system , during the intervals of sporting and cultural events, as well as in schools, when these mechanisms are available.

It also provides for the disclosure of the telephone numbers of the organs of denunciation of racism, through permanent or temporary posters, affixed in a visible way to the public of schools or cultural and sports events.

The legislation also establishes that the State will grant the “Amazonas for the Promotion of Racial Equality” Seal, upon proof of the permanent campaign against racism in its establishments or events. Those awarded the seal will be able to use it in their advertising pieces.

Largest population

The black population is the largest in the country, representing 56% of the 212 million inhabitants, but it is also the most victimized.

The study “Armed violence and racism: the role of firearms in racial inequality”, by the Sou da Paz Institute, shows that of the 30,000 murders by armed aggression in 2019, 78% were against black people. Armed violence in Brazil mostly affects black men and especially young people. This was the group that had 80% more victims by firearms in 2020.

“I regret that even today it is still necessary to create laws for people to do the basics, which is to respect each other, but, if it is still necessary, that we can do our part and create means of education and awareness. This law has this objective, to allow that, through educational campaigns in schools, sports, cultural events and other spaces, information, clarifications and numbers of complaints are disseminated so that people are aware that racist and discriminatory behavior is something that it doesn’t fit, it never did and, now, much less”, he said.
