A pedestrian bridge, which is over the Mampituba River and connects the cities of Torres (RS) and Passo de Torres (SC), fell at around 2:30 am this Monday (20). Firefighters were called and rescued at least 30 people from the water; three are missing, including a mother and a 1-year-old son.

The bridge served only for pedestrians, was 30 meters long and was supported by cables. According to the Torres city hall, around 100 people were passing through it at the time of the accident, despite a sign informing that the capacity was for only 20. They were returning on foot from Passo de Torres to Torres after a Carnival party.

“Very sad. Now it is time to show solidarity with the people and hope that there are no other victims”, said the mayor of Passo de Torres, Valmir Rodrigues, after visiting the site this morning.
