Isaac Souza, 24, from Rio de Janeiro, secured the second Olympic spot for Brazil at the 2024 Paris Games, three days after fellow countryman Ingrid Oliveira won the first. This Friday (21), the 24-year-old jumper advanced to the final of the 10-meter platform event at the World Aquatics Championships in Fukuoka (Japan). He returns to the pool at 6:30 am (Brasília time) this Saturday (22), the last day of competitions (see program at the end).
“Another Olympic Games for my career. I knew it would be a very complicated competition, so I had to extract the best to get the spot. Now there’s the final on Saturday and I really ask for everyone’s support in Brazil”, said Isaac, who represented Brazil at the Tokyo Olympics and won bronze at the Pan American Games in Lima (Peru) in 2019.
The jumper achieved an unprecedented classification in his career for a World Cup final, placing 11th (418.95 points) among the 12 athletes who advanced. In the two previous editions of the competition, in Gwangju (South Korea) in 2019 and Budapest (Hungary) in 2022, Issac said goodbye to the medal dispute with 13th and 15th positions, respectively.
Brazil also had the debutant Diogo Silva, aged 19, on the 10m platform, who competed for the first time in the adult World Cup. He finished the competition in 27th place (344.25 points).
In addition to the men’s 10m platform final, Brazil will fight for the podium in the mixed synchronized 3m springboard final, with Anna Lúcia dos Santos and Rafael Max. The decision will be at 3:30 am (Brasília time).
The Olympic ranking at the Fukuoka World Cup is not nominal: the vacancy belongs to the country. Only in 2024 will the team that will go to the Games be defined. The World Cup distributes three spots in each of the synchronized races. The competition is the first of three qualifying windows for the Paris 2024 Games. Then, in October, there will be the Pan American Games in Santiago (Chile) – which guarantee places to the champions of individual disputes (3m springboard and 10m platform, men and women) – and in 2024 the World Cup in Doha (Qatar), which will distribute four places (synchronized events).
