Brazil shines, but open TV snubs women’s Libertadores – 10/17/2023 – The World Is a Ball

Despite having disappointed in this year’s World Cup, Brazilian women’s football appears to be very strong when the focus is on the clubs and the level is continental.

All the country’s representatives in the Libertadores – Corinthians, Internacional and Palmeiras – are in the semi-finals of the competition, which has been held since the 5th in Colombia.

Of the 16 clubs that, divided into four groups, started the Libertadores, in addition to the Brazilians, Atlético Nacional, Palmeiras’ opponent this Tuesday (17), in Bogotá, at 9:30 pm (Brasília time) survived.

At the same time, this Wednesday (18), Corinthians and Internacional are dueling for the other place in the final, in Cali.

The Brazilians’ campaigns are exemplary, as they are perfect and exciting.

Corinthians, Palmeiras and Internacional played four matches each (three in the group stage, the other in the quarter-finals) and won all of them.

Until now, however, no one interested has been able to watch a Libertadores game on open TV. And this will most likely continue until the end, even if the decision is between Brazilians, even if it is Corinthians x Palmeiras.

Globo and Band have the broadcast rights to the tournament, which is in its 15th edition this year – Brazilian teams have triumphed 11 times. Both show the matches only on their subscription channels, SporTV and BandSports, respectively.

This Tuesday, the day of the Palmeiras semi-final, Globo’s programming schedule calls for Uruguay x Brazil, for the 2026 men’s World Cup qualifiers.

On Wednesday, no Corinthians x Inter on the “plim plim” screen, but men’s football (Brazilian Championship). The 9:30 pm games are Goiás x São Paulo, Vasco x Fortaleza and Bahia x Inter. The best placed among them in the table occupies sixth place, 13 points from the lead.

On the Band schedule, on both days, entertainment with Melhor da Noite (8:30 pm), followed by the humorous Perrengue do Dia (10 pm).

The Libertadores final is on Saturday (21), in Cali, in prime time on Brazilian TV (8:30 pm Brasília).

I read texts in the media (including this Sheet) who stated that, if there was a Brazilian club in the decision, Globo could show the match.

In the banner that shows Jornal Nacional and the soap opera “Terra e Paixão”? No no go. It will be SporTV.

At Band, the schedule at the time of writing foresees Jornal da Band (7:20 pm) and Formula 1 2023 (10 pm). Enigmatic, since there is no activity scheduled for that time in Austin, the location of the stage of a championship that has already been decided – the race is on Sunday.

No football, no women’s Libertadores. It will really be BandSports.

Commercial interests predominate, there are contracts signed with sponsors, and I never thought that anything could be changed on open TV, which does not prevent the lamentation from being exposed.

Because all Brazilian participants have put on a show in the women’s Libertadores, and being shown on open TV would give more people the chance to follow the players, individually and collectively.

Palmeiras, current champion, has 21 goals in favor (5 from Bia Zaneratto, 4 from Amanda Gutierres) and only 3 against.

Inter, the Brazilian runner-up, scored 16 goals, conceded only 4, and the Gurias Coloradas have the championship’s top scorer (Priscila, with six goals).

Corinthians, the Brazilian champion, also scored 16 goals (5 from Milene), and goalkeeper Lelê, a member of the Brazilian team, scored… none.

The alviverde team is trying, in its second participation, for its second trophy. Colorado is a newcomer to the competition, and the black and white team, who won it three times (2017, 2019 and 2021), seeks to isolate itself as the biggest champion – it is tied with São José, from the interior of São Paulo.
