With the case of television presenter Fausto Silva, better known as Faustão, doubts arose about how the heart transplant system works in Brazil and what rhythm it assumes. According to the Ministry of Health, between August 19th and 26th, 13 transplants of this type were performed throughout the country, of which seven took place in the state of São Paulo.

According to information from the federal government, in the first half of this year, 206 heart transplants were performed in the country. The total represents a 16% increase compared to the first half of 2022.

This Sunday (27), when Faustão performed the procedure at Hospital Israelita Albert Einstein, in São Paulo, another patient who was waiting in line also received a heart. Both had priority on the waiting list, in view of their health condition. The queue is the same for patients from the Unified Health System (SUS) and patients who receive care through the private network.

As criteria, in addition to the assessment of the patient’s health status, blood type, weight and height compatibility, genetic compatibility and other more specific ones, such as the level of severity, which varies according to the organ. of the body. When two or more patients have similar conditions, what serves as a tiebreaker is the order of arrival.

As highlighted by the Ministry of Health, Brazil has the largest public system of organ transplants in the world.

“The structure is managed by the Ministry of Health, which ensures that highly complex surgeries are performed for patients from the public and private network, on an equal basis. Patients, through the SUS, receive comprehensive, equitable, universal and free assistance, including preparatory exams, surgery, follow-up and post-transplantation medication”,
