Brazil meets rivals at the Wheelchair Basketball World Cup – News of Brazil

The men’s and women’s wheelchair basketball teams met on Wednesday (8) their opponents in the first phase of the World Championship of the modality, to be played in Dubai (United Arab Emirates), between 9 and 20 June. The competition was scheduled for November 16th to 27th last year, but was postponed so as not to coincide with the men’s soccer World Cup in neighboring Qatar.
In the men’s tournament, the Brazilian team was drawn in Group A, with Australia, Italy and the hosts. The main strength of the bracket, the Australians were in third place in the previous edition, held in Hamburg (Germany), in 2018. Current world and Paralympic champions, Great Britain is in Group D, along with the United States, Iran and Iraq.
In the women’s dispute, Brazil fell in Group B, with Canada, China, Australia, Spain and Great Britain. The British are the current world runners-up, while the Chinese were silver medalists at the Tokyo Paralympics (Japan). Both were defeated, in the respective finals, by the Netherlands, which is in Group A, alongside Algeria, USA, Thailand, Germany and the Japanese.
The men’s competition brings together 16 teams, divided into four groups. All will compete in the knockout stage. The first phase serves to define which will be the confrontations of the round of 16. The women’s tournament has 12 teams, divided into two groups. The top four from each advance to the quarterfinals.
The Brazilian teams qualified for the World Cup in the Wheelchair Basketball America Cup, held in July last year, in São Paulo. The men’s team finished the tournament in fourth place, while the women’s team won bronze. The four best teams among men and the three among women secured a place in Dubai.
It will be the fourth participation of both teams in the respective World Cups. Among men, the best campaign was a ninth place, among 12 teams, in the 2006 edition, in Amsterdam (Holland). In the feminine, the best performance was precisely in Hamburg, with the tenth position (among 12 teams).
