Brazil joins forces to host the 2027 Women’s World Cup – News of Brazil

The ball has already rolled in the Women’s World Cup, in Australia and New Zealand, a competition that could have a great impact on the sport in Brazil depending on the success of the team commanded by Pia Sundhage. However, the country is getting ready so that, regardless of the final result on Oceania’s lawns, women’s football will have even more visibility and attention in 2027, the year of the next edition of the World Cup. Brazil is, along with three other candidacies (two of them formed by sets of countries), a finalist to host the championship in four years. The choice will be made in May 2024, at FIFA’s annual congress.
Sports Minister Ana Moser traveled to the 2023 host countries to follow the Cup and also strengthen the Brazilian candidacy behind the scenes. Moser spoke about the importance of bringing the event to Brazil. The minister believes that the undertaking fits in with the sport’s development initiative in the country, which includes the National Strategy for Women’s Football, to be regulated by the government.
“This candidacy does not come alone. It comes in the context of the construction of women’s football as the focus of this administration. We can make a parallel with other sports, including mine, volleyball, which made progress based on the continuity of an investment. There is no magic formula. The 2027 World Cup would be the culmination of a strategy to bring more visibility. One action helps another. We will be there in Australia and New Zealand fighting for this candidacy for the country and the continent, because it would be the first women’s World Cup in South America”, said the minister.
In fact, in nine editions of the World Cup, South America has never had the honor of hosting the competition. The event has already passed through Europe on three occasions. The United States and China have also hosted the World Cup twice each. Oceania debuts in 2023. Central America and Africa have also never been awarded the tournament.
The African continent, however, will have the opportunity to compete with South Africa as a host country candidate. Two other blocks are in dispute: Belgium, Holland and Germany form the joint candidacy of Uefa (Union of European Football Associations); United States and Mexico, in the Concacaf (Football Confederation of North, Central and Caribbean America).
The director of competitions for the CBF, Júlio Avellar, was also optimistic about Brazil’s chances of being victorious in next year’s elections.
“It is important to emphasize that we had the 2014 World Cup, the 2016 Rio Olympics, the 2019 Copa America. So, all the infrastructure and sports machinery already exist in Brazil. We have strong candidates, of course. South Africa hosted the 2010 World Cup. The United States and Mexico will jointly host the 2026 edition. It’s a tough fight, but I think the chances are great”, opined Avellar, who worked for FIFA for 12 years.
Candidate federations have until December 8 to send FIFA, the organization that regulates world football, the necessary documentation. Then, the inspection of the entity in the future places of games and training will begin.
“We are thrilled with the expressions of interest received, as they come from countries with a strong footballing tradition, thus confirming the popularity of women’s football around the world,” said FIFA Secretary General Fatma Samoura when the finalist applications were confirmed in May.
