The government of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) is evaluating Brazil’s entry into the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), known as the “club of rich countries”. The information was given by the Secretary of International Affairs of the Ministry of Finance, Tatiana Rosito. According to her, the process still depends on “political decisions and alignments”.

Rosito stated that an Interministerial Working Group (GTI), headed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, was “recreated” with the function of advising the Brazilian government on OECD policies.

According to her, it is not up to the GTI to decide on Brazil’s rise in the bloc, but it is a basis of support for the government’s decisions “beyond the technical areas” in joining the bloc.

“Since the beginning of the year, the government has been carrying out assessments. The accession memorandum is quite broad, it is more than a thousand pages long, several areas still involve quite large changes in legislation, although most of it has already been incorporated. Furthermore, it increasingly involves political decisions and alignments. So, I think, over time, the group will support this government assessment effort that goes beyond technical areas,” he said.

This Monday (18), the OECD recommended that the Lula government strengthen the autonomy of the Federal Police (PF) against political interference in the corporation. The recommendation was presented during the release of the report with analyzes on topics relevant to the country, such as the economy and climate change.
