Brazil occupies second place in a ranking that highlights the 40 cities with the highest homicide rates per population in the world. The numbers come from a report published in the British newspaper DailyMail this Sunday (10). While Mexico appears with 15 cities among the most violent in the world, based on homicide rates, Brazil comes next with 10 cities.
The violence data was highlighted by the Citizen Council for Public Security and Criminal Justice (CCPSCJ), an advocacy group based in Mexico City, which compiled an annual report based on the 2022 information.
The first Brazilian city to appear in the ranking, in 11th place, is Mossoró, in Rio Grande do Norte, with 63 annual homicides for every 100 thousand inhabitants. “The rapidly growing city has developed a reputation for drug trafficking, robberies, assaults and other gang-related crimes that are attributed to poverty and ill-equipped law enforcement,” points out the DailyMail.
In 19th place comes Salvador (BA), as the second city with the most violent deaths in the country (homicide rate of 57 annual homicides per 100 thousand inhabitants); followed by Manaus (AM) in 21st place, with a rate of 51; and Feira de Santana (BA) in 22nd place, with a score of 50. Vitória da Conquista (BA) appears in 26th place (47).
The city of Natal appears in 28th place, registering 569 homicides in 2022. In March of this year, the capital of RN was the scene of a series of attacks by criminal factions.
Representative Osmar Terra commented on the study’s numbers on social media and criticized Brazil’s position in comparison with Mexico, “where drugs were decriminalized.” “Interestingly, of the 10 most violent Brazilian cities on this list, 7 are capitals, 6 from the Northeast and 1 from the North,” he wrote.
