Brazilian football had 109 matches suspected of manipulation, according to a company survey Sportradar published this Monday (4). The company was hired by the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) to analyze matches in the country since 2017 and identify possible cases for investigation.
In total, Sportradar monitored around nine thousand football matches in Brazil in 2023, including 118 different championships. Of the total, 109 matches were considered suspicious, which corresponds to just over 1.2% of the matches.
Brazil remains the world leader in games suspected of manipulation, but compared to 2022, there was a 29% drop in the number of suspicious matches – the first annual drop since 2020.
Among all the matches considered suspicious, 15 are from competitions linked to the CBF and 94 from State Federations. There were 13 games in Series D of the Brazilian Championship, in addition to a duel for the Copa Verde and another for Series B.
Sportradar found no suspicious matches in Series A of the Brazilian Championship, Series C, Copa do Brasil, U20 or Copa do Nordeste.
Minas Gerais club mentioned in report
The only Series B match in the document involves a club from Minas Gerais: Tombense, in a duel with Londrina. The suspicion behind the match concerns the application of yellow cards.
Another highlight on the list of games is São Francisco, from Acre. The team was mentioned in eight of the 15 games, seven duels in Series D and one in the Copa Verde. Interporto-TO is the second most mentioned club, with five matches in Série D 2023.
CBF invested in Integrity Unit
In the second half of 2023, the CBF opened the Integrity Unit, which deals precisely with corruption in football matches. The measure was a reinforcement of the entity after Operation Maximum Penalty, which also investigates the participation of players in betting schemes in national football.
The CBF also signed an agreement with the Federal Police to send copies of all reports on suspected cases detected.
