Brazil exceeds goals and has the best campaign in history at the Pan American Games – News of Brazil

The Santiago 2023 Pan American Games ended this Sunday, the 5th, but they are already marked in history. The largest delegation to compete outside the country sent fire and defeated a series of marks, reaching the goals established by the Brazilian Olympic Committee (COB). Brazil reached 40 places in the Olympic Games and won 205 medals, 66 gold, 73 silver and 66 bronze, setting a new record for the total number of medals and gold. With the achievements in Santiago and the absolute second place in the medals table, behind only the United States, Brazil proves once again the sustainable evolution of national Olympic sport, further extending the best period in its history, inspiring youth and bringing the expectation of a major campaign in Paris 2024.
“I am very pleased with Brazil’s performance at the Santiago 2023 Pan American Games. COB always wants to make tomorrow better than yesterday and that was our objective. We knew the difficulties, but we also knew that the work of the COB and the Confederations was very well done. As we know the talent and potential of Brazilian athletes, the true stars of sporting events. It fills me with pride to see that today we are respected and are in the place we deserve to be in the medals table. May the example of our athletes reach even more Brazilian youth, so that they realize the benefits of a life guided by Olympic values”, said COB president Paulo Wanderley.
Brazil left Lima 2019, four years ago, with the best numbers so far: 54 gold medals, 45 silver and 70 bronze, totaling 169 podiums. The improvement in Santiago is more than 20% in the number of medals. Furthermore, with the 40 achieved in Santiago, Brazil now has 143 guaranteed places for the Olympic Games, which gives these athletes and teams greater peace of mind to prepare in the best possible way.
“The COB’s goals were achieved: number of Olympic places, both athletes and teams, total number of medals and gold. We also consolidated ourselves among the top three countries in the medals table. We managed to come in second place for the second time. So our objectives were achieved, which leaves us encouraged and confident for the Paris Olympic Games”, said Rogério Sampaio, head of the Brazilian mission in the Chilean capital.
“Both the COB and the Olympic or Pan-American Confederations have been seeking to improve their deliveries. And this combination of efforts led us to achieve this great result in Santiago”, complemented the 1992 Olympic champion and general director of the COB.
Brazil’s evolution in the Pan American Games is sustainable, but it has taken a leap in recent cycles. In Mar del Plata 1995, the country came in sixth place, with 18 gold medals. In Winnipeg 1999 and Santo Domingo 2003, he placed fourth. With the Games at home, in Rio 2007, came a sequence of third places (also in Guadalajara 2011 and Toronto 2015). At the Pan American Games in Lima 2019, Team Brazil reached second place, with more difficulties than they had in the campaign in Santiago 2003.
“What makes me most satisfied with our result is seeing the evolution of modalities that until then, not even at the Pan American Games, we had achieved satisfactory results. In Santiago we had many flagships, such as boxing and gymnastics, to name a few. But seeing the growth of other modalities directly reflects on the medals table. This is our main objective, to bring results and medals and see the athletes on top of the podium”, said COB vice-president Marco La Porta.
