Brazil beat Iran by 100 to 59 in the opening of the Basketball World Cup. The match was played on Saturday morning (26), in Jakarta (Indonesia). The national team is in Group G and returns to the court next Monday (28), at 10:30 am, Brasilia time, to face Spain, current world champion.
In Saturday’s game, Brazil completely controlled the actions and was in front for practically the entire time. The best player of the match was forward Bruno Caboclo, who was the MVP with 16 points and seven rebounds.
“We managed to neutralize Iran and our attack flowed well from the start of the game. We played a great game to start the championship and we need to keep improving during the competition. The key for the sequence and for all the teams that want to go far in the World Cup is the defense”, said coach Gustavo De Conti to the advice of the Brazilian Basketball Confederation (CBB).
Despite the victory, the injury to guard Raul Neto, at the beginning of the third quarter of the game, is a cause for concern. One of the main players in the national team, the athlete suffered a sprain in his right knee and was taken to a local hospital for tests.
The national team is in Group G of the World Cup, with Iran, Spain and Ivory Coast. In this first phase, the two best advance to form a new group with the two best of Group H, which has France, Canada, Latvia and Lebanon. Then, the two teams in Group G play two more games, facing only rivals from the other key, and carrying the results of the first phase. The top two go to the quarterfinals.
The World Cup distributes seven direct berths to the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, two for the Americas. To qualify without needing the Pre-Olympics, Brazil will have to be at least the second best on the continent, in a tournament that also has the United States, Canada, Venezuela, Puerto Rico, Mexico and the Dominican Republic.
