Brazil convenes new meeting of the UN Security Council

The objective is to discuss the conflict between Israel and Palestine

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mauro Vieira, is on his way to New York, in the United States (USA), to personally participate in the meeting of the United Nations (UN) Security Council, which will discuss the situation of the conflict between Israel and Palestine, which reached its fifth day this Wednesday (11). The meeting is scheduled for this Friday (13).

The chancellor was fulfilling an official agenda in Cambodia and, from there, would go to the Philippines, but he postponed his trip to Southeast Asia to attend the emergency meeting, as Brazil presides over the Security Council throughout this month of October, with the prerogative to convene collegiate meetings.

This is the second meeting of the UN Security Council to discuss this new conflict. Over the weekend, the collegiate met behind closed doors and no statement was issued. On the occasion, Brazil was represented by the ambassador to the UN, Sergio Danese.

Still over the weekend, in a statement, the Itamaraty Palace defended its commitment to the two-state solution, with Palestine and Israel living together in peace and security, within mutually agreed and internationally recognized borders.

Earlier, this Wednesday, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva made an appeal to the Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN), António Guterres, and the international community, in defense of Palestinian and Israeli children.

After intensifying the bombing against the Gaza Strip in recent days, the Israeli Ministry of Defense reported that it is considering occupying the territory by land, which could increase the number of civilian victims.

The Israeli Embassy in Washington reported that the death toll from Hamas attacks over the weekend exceeded one thousand. The dead are, for the most part, civilians, shot in homes, in the streets and at an open-air party, which took place a few kilometers from the border with the Gaza Strip.

The Gaza Health Ministry said that Israel’s retaliatory airstrikes had claimed the lives of at least 830 people and injured more than 4,300 as of Tuesday. The UN said more than 180,000 Gazans were left homeless, many of them crowded on the streets or in schools. Furthermore, at least 11 employees of the organization have died in Gaza in recent days, as a result of Israeli attacks.
