The Brazilian women’s volleyball team beat Japan in the pre-Olympics in a decisive five-set game this Sunday (24) at their opponents’ home and secured their place at the Paris Olympic Games in 2024.
Playing in Tokyo in a direct fight for the last open spot in the group, Brazil beat the housewives 3-2, with splits of 25/21, 22/25, 27/25 and 15/25, with 15/10 in the tie break.
Two-time champions in Beijing (2008) and London (2012), the Brazilian women’s team is looking for its third title in Paris.
With the victory, the team led by coach José Roberto Guimarães ended its participation in the pre-Olympics with six wins and just one defeat against Turkey, which qualified first in the group.
The game against the Turks on Friday (22) was marked by tributes from Brazilian players to Walewska, Olympic champion at the Beijing Games who died on Thursday (21).
“We committed to fighting for it [Walewska]. It’s a tribute to have achieved this for everything she represented and will always represent”, said team captain Gabi Guimarães after the match with Japan in an interview with SporTV.
Serbia and the Dominican Republic also secured places at the Paris Games in the pre-Olympics. Germany, Italy, Poland and the USA compete for the two remaining places this Sunday.
