Investigation

The estimate is that at least 50 thousand people have been directly affected in Maceió

Manaus (AM) — The president of Braskem’s Parliamentary Inquiry Commission (CPI), Omar Aziz (PSD-AM), reiterated this Thursday (22) that he will thoroughly investigate the responsibility for the collapse that affected around 20% of Maceió-AL due to rock salt extraction. With the participation of parliamentarians from Alagoas in the commission, Omar said he hopes to bring a satisfactory response to the more than 50 thousand people affected in the city.

“It is not in 2018 that the problem with rock salt exploration begins. There is also evidence of environmental impact on lakes in the region. Maceió is a beautiful, touristic city, but unfortunately 20% of the city is affected by these tremors”,

recalled the senator.

The first meeting from which the CPI’s next steps were outlined, held last Wednesday (21), was also marked by the choice of the rapporteur, senator Rogério Carvalho (PT-SE). Regarding the composition of the CPI, Omar highlighted that he sought neutrality in the nomination for rapporteur, but this does not mean that parliamentarians from the State of Alagoas will not be able to contribute to the work of the CPI.

“We have members of the CPI who are from Alagoas, so the State is very well represented on the commission. They are members, they are not being removed from Braskem’s CPI and they will have a guaranteed voice. You don’t necessarily need to be from the State to investigate. And rest assured that we will investigate thoroughly,”

added Omar.

The city of Maceió faces a problem of subsidence due to rock salt extraction activities. In 2010, studies showed that areas of the city were sinking at a rate of up to 6 centimeters per year, due to the removal of the mineral, carried out by the petrochemical company Braskem. Experts point out that the sinking was caused by the retraction of the ground due to the operation, which compromised urban infrastructure and put the local population at risk.
