Federal deputy Guilherme Boulos (PSOL-SP), current pre-candidate for Mayor of São Paulo, deleted a publication reflecting the growth in income concentration of different social groups in the country between 2017 and 2022, a period that encompasses the government of Jair Bolsonaro (PL).

The deleted text cited the technical note published by the Fiscal Policy Observatory of FGV Ibre (Brazilian Institute of Economics of the Getúlio Vargas Foundation), published by Sheetin which the income of the richest in the Brazilian social pyramid grew three times the rate observed among the rest of the population.

Allies of the former president then began to criticize the parliamentarian for the deleted publication, and even Bolsonaro commented on the situation on social media, needling the psolista.

Boulos stated, in a text published on

He cited the gains of the richest 0.01%, a group that saw its average income growth practically double (96%) between 2017 and 2022. Meanwhile, the gains of the vast majority of the adult population (the poorest 95%) they did not increase more than 33% — a little above the inflation of the period (31%).

The income of 15 thousand people at the top of the social pyramid in Brazil has grown in recent years to triple the rate observed among the rest of the population, increasing the concentration of wealth at the end of the Bolsonaro government.

Carla Zambelli (PL-SP), then, mocked her colleague from the Chamber of Deputies and questioned the reason for deleting the post. “For what reason did you delete it, Boulos? Because without realizing it you admitted that the income of the poorest rose by 33% during the 4 years of President Bolsonaro’s government?”, she wrote.

Another who commented on the publication was São Paulo councilor Rubinho Nunes (União Brasil), one of the founders of MBL (Movimento Brasil Livre) and who left the group in 2022. He posted an image of the psolista’s text and said that “even socialists who don’t understands nothing about economics, he saw that as a compliment”.

“Boulos accuses Bolsonaro of having enriched the Brazilian people! Even a socialist who doesn’t understand anything about economics saw that this was a compliment. So he deleted the tweet as if nothing had happened”, he argued.

Afterwards, Bolsonaro republished the image of Boulos’ deleted publication and ironically thanked him, stating that the parliamentarian was sincere in presenting, in his view, an advance in income distribution during his administration.

“I thank Bolos [sic] for your sincerity in exposing that income distribution advanced during our administration even though that was not your intention and you deleted the post shortly afterwards”, wrote the former president.

Social inequality is one of the central themes of Boulos’ pre-campaign speech. He has said that he wants to be elected mayor to combat the discrepancy in reality between residents of the rich and peripheral regions of the capital.

The psolist also highlights his trajectory of more than 20 years in social movements, leading the MTST (Homeless Workers Movement), and says he does not mind being called radical if opponents consider fighting for dignified living conditions and housing for the less favored classes.
