Boris Fausto: Politicians and entities mourn death – 04/18/2023 – Politics

Politicians, academics and Brazilian organizations lamented, through social networks, the death of historian Boris Fausto, which occurred on Tuesday (18). The writer died at the age of 92, in São Paulo, and the wake will be held on Wednesday (19).

The Faculty of Law of USP (University of São Paulo) released a note mourning the death of Boris, who graduated from the institution in 1953. the role of the researcher in the development of theory about the history of Brazil.

The UNE (National Union of Students), an entity that represents higher education students in the country, also issued a note. The organization stated that the intellectual “leaves a profound legacy” for Brazilian historiography.

The ANPG (National Association of Graduate Students), which represents Brazilian graduate students, highlighted the works published by Boris, considered “fundamental for understanding the country in the 20th century”.

The Instituto Brasil-Israel reiterated the teacher’s training as a lawyer, noting that he “never felt complete until he found the story”. The organization manifested itself because the academic was of Jewish and Turkish origin.

Companhia das Letras, the publisher where Boris Fausto released part of his works, mourned the death of the intellectual, showing solidarity with his readers, family, fans and friends.

Among the politicians, the governor of Rio Grande do Sul, Eduardo Leite (PSDB), highlighted the importance of the professor in the reflection of Brazilian political life, and said that Boris traced his career “pointing out the contemporary challenges of a society divided and lacking in projects nationals”.

Senator Randolfe Rodrigues (Rede-AP), leader of the government in Congress, said that the intellectual had a lot of sensitivity and marked a generation of historians. “His death is mourning for the great culture. Minister of Education in the first term of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT), Cristovam Buarque said that, without Boris Fausto, “we would not know how our country was formed”.

Among the academics, the sociologist Sérgio Abranches spoke out, emphasizing the importance of the historian as, according to him, one of the most lucid and coherent contemporary Brazilian thinkers.
