In less than a decade, an unimpressive deputy with a corporatist platform has established dominance over the Brazilian right. Jair Bolsonaro has expanded his defense of the military and police, explored an ultraconservative religious agenda, and staged a conversion to liberalism to capitalize on the goodwill of economic actors.
With his passage through power interrupted, the former president has plans to renew these instruments to exert influence as an oppositionist and isolate potential opponents within his political field.
In an interview with the Wall Street Journal, Bolsonaro said he sees himself as “the national leader of the right”. In Florida, the former president added that “there is no one else” to fill that role at the moment.
Bolsonaro seems to be betting on maintaining the vacuum that was produced over the last political cycle. Dependent on anti-PTism, the right gave way to the strident methods of the former president. The noise seduced voters and even alternative candidates within that group, who were interested in piggybacking on the captain’s popularity.
The former president hopes to repeat this script in the opposition. In an interview with the American newspaper, Bolsonaro claimed command of a right-wing agenda against Lula. He said he will work with lawmakers and governors allied with a pro-business agenda, against increased spending, opposed to abortion and in favor of the use of guns.
It goes without saying that cost control never interested the captain. Apart from that, the ex-president’s plan is to make some of the flags on which he set his mark to be confused with the central platform of the opposition.
Bolsonaro bets that Bolsonarism can stay alive as the main political current of the right even if the TSE declares its ineligibility. He indicated that he should test his potential for transferring votes as a mere electoral force in the municipal disputes of 2024.
