Bolsonaro will testify to the Federal Police about Marcos do Val’s ‘plan’

Testimony, scheduled for 2 pm this Wednesday (12), will be the fourth of the former president to the Federal Police this year

Former President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) will give a new statement to the Federal Police, next Wednesday (12), within the scope of the operation that targets Senator Marcos do Val. As confirmed to Metrópoles by the former representative’s legal and communication advisors, the hearing will take place at 2 pm, at the headquarters of the PF, in Brasília (DF).

Last month, Minister Alexandre de Moraes, of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), ordered Bolsonaro to give a new statement to the Federal Police. This will be the fourth statement by the former representative to the PF since the beginning of the year.

The operation investigates an alleged plan to clandestinely record Moraes, in an attempt to reverse the former president’s defeat in the last elections.

Initially, do Val had said, on social networks, that there was an “attempt by Bolsonaro to coerce me so that I could carry out a coup d’état with him”. Afterwards, the senator changed the version and said that the former president would have remained silent during an entire meeting they had. In this version, the parliamentarian blamed former deputy Daniel Silveira for the plan, and also guaranteed that he denounced everything to Minister Alexandre de Moraes.

In June, Moraes authorized a search and seizure operation against Senator Marcos do Val. The searches took place in the functional apartment occupied by the senator in Brasília, in his office in the Senate and, also, in at least one address in Espírito Santo.

The measures were requested after investigators identified the senator’s attempts to disrupt the investigations into the January 8 terrorist acts. At the end of June, the senator requested removal from parliamentary activities after needing medical attention during a session at the CPI investigating the January 8 coup acts.

Senator Marcos do Val (Podemos-ES) detailed that, “on the 7th of December [de 2022]I was in the plenary and Daniel Silveira appeared”. “[Ele] asked him to go outside, because he didn’t have the suits [ternos e gravata para permanecer no plenário]. I went out and he said the president [Bolsonaro] wanted to talk to me.”

Do Val said he found “strange” having been sought out by Silveira, but claimed not to have initially rejected contact.

“The next day, it was not possible [atender ao pedido de reunião], and asked if it could be on Friday. But I was already thinking that I needed to report to Minister Alexandre de Moraes. I met him in the White Room [do STF] and I said that I had been approached by Daniel Silveira and I asked the minister what he thought, whether I should go or not. He said: ‘Go, because the more information the better’. I booked the next day”

Then, the senator narrated what happened at the meeting with Bolsonaro and Silveira, which, according to the congressman, took place at Granja do Torto, one of the official residences of the Presidency of the Republic:

“He [Silveira] I had said they would pick me up in another vehicle. My driver pulled into a parking lot, he pulled up a car behind, Daniel was already inside. I asked my driver to wait, got out of the car, went to their car. I passed without being identified [na cancela da Granja do Torto] and, for me, it was something related to the intelligence area and the question of camping in the barracks. We started the subject just me, Daniel and the former president [Bolsonaro]. I said that it was better to let society know right away that there was not going to be any military intervention, and get those Brazilians out of there.”

“Daniel Silveira started explaining why I was called”continued do Val, who then narrated the plan, according to him formulated by Silveira, to set up a meeting with Moraes, go to that meeting carrying recording equipment and try to urge the Supreme Minister to admit some kind of illegal intervention in the electoral process in order to benefit the then candidate Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT).

“I said I would think about it and, during the whole process, the president was silent, it was Daniel who spoke”, said Marcos do Val. “I took the flight, went to Vitória, sent a message to the minister [Moraes] informing more or less what the conversation would be. I went back to Brasilia, we met at the STF. I reported to him. The minister was surprised, he is very introspective. He looked up, shook his head. I said: ‘Minister, am I released?’ He said yes.”

“The president didn’t say anything, but he didn’t stop Daniel from talking about the idea”, added Marcos do Val. “When I said I wasn’t going to fulfill the mission, that I wasn’t going to go along with it, he [Silveira] kept insisting. Called several times, I didn’t answer the phone
