Bolsonaro saved democracy, says Janaina Paschoal – 06/19/2023 – Mônica Bergamo

Professor and former state deputy Janaina Paschoal says that the new dialogues found on the cell phone of Jair Bolsonaro’s (PL) former assistant, Lieutenant Colonel Mauro Cid, reinforce that the former president did not participate in coup-mongering articulations.

On social media, she said that the former president “saved democracy”. “If they are not mere conjectures, the dialogues that have surfaced in recent days show, in fact, that Bolsonaro saved democracy by resisting the pressure suffered by a large part of his surroundings. He even left office before his term. ends,” she wrote.

To the column, Janaina says that “the sentence may have been too strong”, but that, in her view, the conversations that were disclosed “go against the grain of the hypothesis raised that he [Bolsonaro] would have set up that whole situation on January 8th to carry out a coup”.

“If he were going to strike a blow, he would have done it while he was in office. Now dialogues are starting to come out that show that, in fact, people close to him [ao ex-presidente]some linked to the Armed Forces, were trying to convince him”, continues the former deputy.

As shown to Sheet, messages retrieved from Lieutenant Colonel Mauro Cid’s device show dialogues in which interlocutors, Army officers and reservists, debated the use of the Armed Forces against the result of the elections won by Lula (PT). Part of the material was revealed by Veja magazine.

“I was surprised by the dialogues. What is being shown is the opposite of what people imagined. Other conversations may come, but we have to be faithful to what is being shown”, says Janaina.

“It’s the opposite of this idea that the president would order [de um golpe de Estado], and the Army would comply. He handed over the position earlier and left. He even runs away from that pressure.”

Questioned about the fact that Bolsonaro had inspired anti-democratic acts, she says that the former president’s mistake was that he “did not know how to hold back their crazy people”.

“He was held hostage. Bolsonaro’s mistake was allowing [a deputada federal] Carla Zambelli, all these people, set the tone. He made a lot of mistakes. So much wrong that lost [a eleição].”

“I denounced the mistakes during the campaign. I didn’t drool. I lost because of that”, continues the professor, who ran for the Senate in the elections, but was far from the vacancy, with just over 447 thousand votes.

This week, the Superior Electoral Court (TSE) is preparing to judge the action that could make Bolsonaro ineligible for eight years. The former representative is accused of abuse of political power and misuse of the media for a meeting with ambassadors at the Alvorada Palace, held when he was still president.

“After Deltan’s trial [Dallagnol, que teve seu mandato cassado pelo TSE]which was very innovative in the bad sense, like it or not, I think it is very likely that they will decide against Bolsonaro”, he says.

And he adds: “I know that the leftists are applauding, but it is a short view. Lula is strengthened in Bolsonaro’s candidacy. Bolsonaro’s unenforceability, today, politically speaking, is good for the right, but people are not seeing that “.
