Bolsonaro reaches the end of the trial with discouraged militancy and empty streets – 30/06/2023 – Politics

Former President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) comes to the end of the trial that revoked his political rights until 2030 with discouraged militancy and without street mobilizations.

According to allies, supporters of the former president followed the trial, reverberated the speech of injustice and persecution, but did not take to the streets because there was no climate, after the 8th of January.

When he lost re-election last year, the former president was reclusive and depressed. But his supporters went to the front of the Army barracks to ask for military intervention.

Businessmen mobilized to finance these acts, just as they had done in those that filled Brasília previously, such as those on September 7, 2021 and 2022.

After months of encampment and a political crisis involving the Army, the protests culminated in January 8 – which, despite Bolsonaro saying they were promoted by elderly people with a Bible under their arms and a flag on their backs, led to the destruction of the headquarters of the three Powers in an unprecedented attack.

Scammers were arrested and many remain behind bars.

The harsh response of the institutions, especially that of the Judiciary, had a practical consequence on Bolsonarist militancy. In addition to the most committed or most radical being arrested, it has avoided major mobilizations since then. Both by themselves and by leaders, who fear being held accountable if something goes wrong.

Federal deputy Filipe Barros (PL-PR) recognizes the discouragement, but says that ineligibility may end up being the trigger to mobilize militancy again.

“It’s an effect since the 8th [de janeiro]. The people are afraid to go out into the street, they are discouraged,” he said.

“It may be the trigger for demonstrations to start. They are interested, but not mobilized. All demonstrations started from below, it comes naturally. It may be that the same phenomenon happens now”, he added.

There is also an assessment around the Chief Executive that the judgment is difficult for the electorate to understand in general. And that the easiest speech to get into the population’s head is the question of why you can’t vote for Bolsonaro.

In addition to January 8, allies also point to the fact that, since the defeat, the imprisonment of the former head of the Executive ended up demobilizing part of his supporters. One wing felt disappointed with Bolsonaro’s behavior, in particular, for having left Brazil before the end of his term.

The former president left for Orlando (USA) on December 30, on a journey surrounded by secrecy, with his closest assistants. With that, he flouted the democratic rite of passing the sash to his successor.

The representative even did a farewell live this Friday and did not mention the trip.

On the occasion, he condemned the attempted terrorist act in Brasilia, criticized the assembly of the Lula government, repeated the persecuted speech, rehearsed a speech as leader of the opposition and defended the anti-democratic acts of his supporters across the country.

The trip disorganized Bolsonarists, who expected Bolsonaro to be more of an opposition leader. A role that the former president still refuses to play, although today he is returning to the spotlight with the declared intention of remaining “100% active” politically, as he said in an interview with Sheet.

The electoral court determined that Bolsonaro will be ineligible until 2030 by a score of 5 to 2. The trial takes place six months after Bolsonaro left office and focuses on a lawsuit filed by the PDT against the ticket due to a meeting of the former president with ambassadors, held in July last year, in which he repeated falsehoods against electronic voting machines.

The trial began on June 22, was interrupted and resumed on Thursday (29). On the day, Brasília hosted a meeting of the São Paulo Forum, with the participation of Lula. Bolsonaristas in the Chamber held an audience to discuss the left-wing group.
