Bolsonaro probes Derrite to run for SP City Hall – 11/13/2023 – Panel

Secretary of Public Security for Tarcísio de Freitas (Republicanos-SP), Guilherme Derrite (PL-SP) was approached by former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL) to run for Mayor of São Paulo.

The consultation generated excitement in the Republican and PP wings, the party to which Derrite was a member from 2018 to 2022 and where many of his allies are, who began to outline a way to put the plan into practice. One of the ideas is to try to build a ticket with the two acronyms and the PL, which would then have its own candidate.

The secretary has said that, in principle, he prefers to continue in state administration. Derrite’s communications office told the Panel that he will not comment on the matter.

Derrite appears as an answer to problems that Bolsonaro has faced in relation to the dispute for Mayor of São Paulo in 2024.

His party, the PL, wants to support the re-election of Ricardo Nunes (MDB), but the former president does not see him as a representative of the right. Tarcísio has also indicated that he intends to side with the emedebista. Ricardo Salles has Bolsonaro’s sympathy, but he created rivalry with the PL leadership by publicly insulting them and today he needs authorization from the party to leave him and be able to contest the election for another party without losing his mandate as federal deputy.

Derrite, in turn, could launch himself as a candidate for the PL, which would please the party leadership, could have the support of Tarcísio and would offer a candidacy of root Bolsonarism with fewer setbacks and indispositions than Salles’.

The secretary would still participate in the dispute as a representative of the area of ​​public security, which has been seen by pre-candidates as one of the central themes of the 2024 campaign. Federal deputy Tabata Amaral (SP) made this calculation when inviting José Luiz Datena to join join the PSB and, possibly, become vice-president, as shown in the Panel.

A retired Military Police officer and licensed federal deputy, Derrite has become notable in recent years for statements seen as encouraging police lethality, such as when he stated that it was shameful for a PM not to kill three criminals in five years. He told Sheet who made a mistake when making statements like that.

From the end of July to the beginning of September, the Military Police carried out Operation Escudo, in Guarujá, the most critical moment of Derrite’s time in the department to date. Launched after the shooting death of a Rota police officer in the city on the coast of São Paulo, the operation left 28 people dead, was criticized by human rights organizations and was the target of allegations of torture by residents of the region.
