Jair Bolsonaro is a politician who likes to wash dirty laundry in public. When Tarcísio de Freitas appeared in a photograph alongside Fernando Haddad, the former president complained about his ally’s “slips”. Now, he stated that Valdemar Costa Neto could implode his party, the PL, for saying that Lula has prestige and popularity.
Bolsonaro will not break with Tarcísio or change his party. The former president simulates crises of this type to use them as discipline mechanisms within his political group.
Founded on anti-PTism, Bolsonarism treats any display of civility between its leaders and a left-wing government as a problem. Logically, it would be difficult to sustain the discourse that the PT is a terrible enemy and a danger to the country when right-wing figures fraternize with rival medallions.
To force a distance, Bolsonaro resorts to embarrassment. The former president helps to spread accusations of betrayal because he understands that, in times of need, politicians in his camp feel obliged to make declarations of loyalty and seek protection under his wings.
The threat worked in Valdemar’s case because, when he spoke of an implosion, the former president suggested that he and dozens of parliamentarians could leave the PL, withering the power of the party. The party president understood: he sought out Bolsonaro to apologize for his comments about Lula and circulated information that he would be more discreet.
What Bolsonaro demands from allies is loyalty to a platform incompatible with a pragmatic policy. A governor depends on a friendly relationship with the Planalto, and a party president needs the federal machine to satisfy his appetite. Bolsonaro prefers that Valdemar does his business in silence.
The ballet is bumpy, but the two continue and will continue dancing. In 2018, Bolsonaro referred to Valdemar as “corrupt and condemned”. Three years later, he was affiliated with the PL. Today, the party pays the former president’s lawyers and salary.
