Bolsonaro makes room for Tarcísio’s career on the right – 07/07/2023 – Dora Kramer

Subtlety, fine intelligence and tactical sense, we know, are not characteristics of Jair Bolsonaro. He himself confirmed this at the recent PL meeting in which he tried to rise above Governor Tarcísio de Freitas, calling him inexperienced in politics.
But in this field, seniority is not always included, because in the 2022 election, the rookie gave the veteran a bath. Tarcísio won the São Paulo government speaking to the center without losing reference to the right and Bolsonaro lost the Presidency for insisting on keeping the blinker turned exclusively in the direction of the extreme bubble.
It’s clear who was smarter. This was again evident in the struggle over tax reform. By harassing the governor, the former president clung to the losing side, isolated himself in radicalism without results and gave Tarcísio the chance to prove himself capable of retreats when greater interests than the electoral one are at stake.
There’s nothing better for someone who is in the process of building a profile more suited to the tastes of the electorate fed up with the polarization trap. The governor came out of the episode bigger and the former president came closer to the irrelevance that the condition of ineligible and tangled up in Justice reserves for him.
Even so, Tarcísio de Freitas and those around him remain firmly committed to ruling out the possibility of his presidential candidacy in 2026. They work with two apparently antagonistic concepts: prudence and precipitation.
On the one hand, they are careful not to repeat the bad example of those who tried to skip the re-election stage. On the other hand, they give Lula time to mature and, if he is doing well, he will be an unbeatable candidate.
In this case, there would be no reason to “spend” Tarcísio in a potentially lost election for Lula. There would also be no reason to miss a stage in building a strong right-wing leadership if the federal government is not sufficiently competitive in the future.
