Former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL) dodged questions and did not answer whether he spoke with the military about the possibility of a coup against the result of the 2022 elections.
Bolsonaro said he is only responsible for what he signed while he was president. He also stated that there was always the possibility of a GLO (Guarantee of Law and Order) operation during the electoral period, “in case of disturbance”.
“I am responsible for everything I signed,” the president told the press this Wednesday (18).
“You saw the movement of a soldier”, he also stated when asked if he had discussed with the military any action against Lula’s (PT) victory in the race for president.
The former president was questioned by journalists after giving a statement to the Federal Police, in Brasília, in an investigation targeting a WhatsApp group in which businesspeople defended a coup against Lula’s election. Bolsonaro delivered a written statement to the PF and denied coup intentions.
As shown by SheetBolsonaro began discussing a coup d’état with the commanders of the Armed Forces, in November 2022, after minister Alexandre de Moraes, president of the TSE (Superior Electoral Court), rejected a PL request to invalidate ballots and impose a fine of R$22.9 million to the party for bad faith litigation.
Bolsonaro’s discussion about military action against the electoral result is the subject of an investigation by the Federal Police.
The former president’s dealings with military personnel were reported by former aide-de-camp Mauro Cid in his statement. The lieutenant colonel indicated that it was on that day that Bolsonaro consulted whether military leaders would support an intervention in the TSE, with the possible arrest of ministers and the calling of new elections.
Bolsonaro was questioned by journalists more than once, this Wednesday, about conversations with military personnel against Lula’s victory. He did not deny that he organized a coup. He said twice that he is only responsible for what he signed.
Former special secretary for Social Communication Fabio Wajngarten, who is also Bolsonaro’s lawyer, interrupted one of Bolsonaro’s responses and said that the election issue is a “turned page.”
