Bolsonaristas say that Nunes demoralizes the former president and they start to consider his own name again – 09/05/2023 – Panel

“No one, I repeat, no one will appropriate Bolsonarist votes and leave Bolsonaro at a distance. The era of locusts is over. Here’s the tip”, wrote Fabio Wajngarten, lawyer for Jair Bolsonaro (PL), on social networks this Tuesday (5).

The message was a message to the mayor of São Paulo, Ricardo Nunes (MDB), who said earlier that he does not have “proximity with President Bolsonaro” as he does not have with President Lula (PT).

Mainly responsible for the dialogue between Bolsonaro and Nunes, Wajngarten was being quoted to take over the emedebista’s vice in 2024. Now, however, he has been encouraged by allies to be head of the ticket, which he still discards.

In the Nunes camp, Wajngarten had been responsible for sewing the support of the president and his allies to the emedebist, barring the launch of a right-wing candidacy. This Tuesday (5), he told people close to him that he has no more ammunition for this mission.

In this context, one of the main targets of criticism is Valdemar Costa Neto, president of the PL. For the Bolsonarist core, he has tested several names for vice and has abandoned an orientation linked to the former president. At that point, former senator Marta Suplicy’s suggestion for Nunes’s vice-president was disappointing.

In Bolsonaro’s surroundings, the withdrawal of ex-minister Ricardo Salles (PL) from running for mayor of São Paulo did not bury the desire to launch a representative name of the group. Faced with the disappointment with Nunes’ position, this articulation should now gain strength again, but concentrated in other names, such as Wajngarten.

The negative reaction indicates a crack in Nunes’ strategy of trying to get Bolsonaro’s support from a distance, without embracing him. For the former president’s allies, the mayor demoralizes and undermines Bolsonaro’s political capital by making successive moves of approximation and rejection.

Nunes’ speech took place days after a Datafolha survey pointed out that 68% of the people from São Paulo interviewed said they did not vote for the candidate nominated by former President Bolsonaro.

In the previous months, Nunes sought to meet with the former president on several occasions. The mayor was at Bolsonaro’s side at official events, in one of which Nunes publicly thanked the former president for his “performance in relation to the capital”, but also at relaxed dinners, wearing the shirt of the soccer team common to both.
