Bluesky: how to create a profile on the social network – 02/10/2024 – #Hashtag

Bluesky made its biggest attempt this Tuesday (6) to be a strong competitor to X (formerly Twitter) by allowing any user to create a profile. Previously, as in the early days of Orkut, access was only allowed to those who obtained an invitation code.

With this, the social network gained more than one million users, and now has four million. It is still little compared to Twitter, which in September 2023 had 245 million daily active users, but it represents a 33% increase in its user base.

The search for orphaned X users is one of the main current battles in the world of technology. Bluesky, Mastodon, Threads, among others, are competing to try to be the “new Twitter”.

“Over the last year we’ve been using code to handle growth while building tools like moderation, custom feeds, and more. Now, we’re ready for anyone to join,” the company said in a post.

This new flow of users caused instability in Bluesky’s servers in the early hours of Wednesday (7). It was not possible to publish new posts, only view those that already existed. The problem has been resolved and the social network says it is improving the systems.

Originally a side project within Twitter, the Bluesky platform was launched in 2022 by Jack Dorsey, the famous and controversial founder of Twitter, who left the company at the end of 2021, shortly before Elon Musk’s forays in 2022.

Bluesky and X have obvious similarities, such as their interfaces and how they are used. On the left of the screen, the Bluesky user navigates through their notifications and profile settings. On the right, you can read posts from profiles you follow or shown by the algorithm. Even the number of characters allowed per post is similar: 300 on Bluesky, and 280 on Elon Musk’s network.

Bluesky, however, has an important difference to its competitor as it is a decentralized social network, like Mastodon. In other words, messages are sent and received on servers controlled by the company.

With this, Bluesky promotes the philosophy of giving users more autonomy, protecting privacy and guaranteeing data security.
