As part of the Blue September celebrations, the month of deaf visibility that marks the struggles and achievements of the hearing impaired, the Government of Amapá promoted, in partnership with the Amapá Deaf Service Center (CAS-AP), the 5th Amapaense Futsal Tournament of the Deaf – Antônio Braga Júnior, which was played on the sports court at the Federal University of Amapá (Unifap), in Macapá.

The competition, coordinated by the Department of Sports and Leisure (Sedel), which brought together eight teams, five male and three female, is named after Antônio Braga Júnior, in honor of the representative of deaf causes in the state who died during the coronavirus pandemic. Covid-19 also highlights the importance of raising awareness for inclusion through sport.

The opening ceremony of the tournament featured Brazilian Sign Language (Libras) interpreters, who in addition to explaining the rules, also translated the national anthem and the Amapá song, moving deaf and hearing athletes, as well as family members.

In inclusive futsal, in addition to the traditional whistles to mark points and fouls, referees also use red flags that signal when athletes should advance or retreat, depending on each play.

According to Haylan Amanajás Abreu, manager of the Sport and Performance Center at Sedel, the objective of fraternizing and bringing sport to everyone’s reach was achieved. “We hand out trophies to the champions, both male and female, we observe great talents in the sport. The most important thing is that the deaf community can interact and have fun. In the first game we brought together athletes of different ages, such as children and teenagers, who together played a great game, had a lot of laughs and that is a great reward”, he highlighted.

Entrepreneur Mirelle do Nascimento has two deaf people in her family, her son Pedro Aurélio and her cousin Flávio Vinicius. She says that with encouragement from CAS-AP she is studying Libra and can already see advances in communication with her family.

“I’m learning sign language more and more, in the past it was more because of random gestures that they got confused. Today’s event makes us very happy for the opportunity, as they both really enjoy playing football, and it is something very important for their lives”said Mirelle.

Athlete Pedro Aurélio said through an interpreter that he was happy with the tournament. “These games are highly anticipated by us, I wanted to ask CAS and Sedel to come together to hold other championships, not just in September. We are going to train more, we really love being here and having the happiness of playing with other athletes, whether they are deaf or not. Thank you very much for this moment and may God bless you all”, he celebrated.

The games are part of the CAS-AP program, which held a talent show at the beginning of the month and which this Tuesday, the 26th, will hold a health and beauty event with manicurists and hairdressers to serve deaf women for free at Center headquarters, on Avenida Cora de Carvalho, corner of Rua Santos Dumont. The Blue September program will end on Friday (29) at the headquarters of the Amapá Public Servants Union (Sinsepeap), with a day of leisure for the families of deaf people, which will include scavenger hunts, games, storytelling and much more.

The director of the Deaf Service Center, Nelma Santos, highlighted the commitment of the Sedel and Unifap technical team in conducting the event, highlighting the importance for everyone to continue to encourage sporting activities, improving each person’s personal condition.

“The month of September is marked by the historical context of the deaf community, as they have already faced barriers, difficulties, some still face them, but we must celebrate the achievements. Our Blue September is complete with programming that includes sport, leisure, beauty, art, making families of deaf people feel valued”pointed out the director.
