Initiative aims to establish a protocol for action against racial discrimination, promoting respect and diversity in the school environment
Manaus (AM) – The state deputy and president of the Legislative Assembly of Amazonas (Aleam), Roberto Cidade (UB), presented a bill to implement an anti-racist action protocol and combat racial discrimination in the State’s educational institutions.
Currently under analysis by Aleam’s Education Commission (COED), the proposal is scheduled to be discussed in the plenary during the return of legislative activities.
“Combating racism and racial discrimination is a non-negotiable commitment in a society that values equality, human dignity and cultural diversity. We need to promote effective measures to ensure an inclusive educational environment, in which students learn and grow free from prejudice and stigmatization,”
defended the deputy president.
The Anti-Racist and Combating Racial Discrimination Protocol’s guiding principles are to guarantee equal opportunities and treatment for all students, regardless of their ethnic-racial origin; promote the appreciation and inclusion of content related to the history, culture and contributions of black and indigenous populations in pedagogical activities; encourage the continued training of teachers and other education professionals on topics related to racism, racial discrimination and ways to combat these problems.
Furthermore, it intends to encourage the participation of the school community, including students, parents and guardians, in building an educational environment free from discrimination; create mechanisms for reporting and monitoring cases of racism and racial discrimination, ensuring the confidentiality and protection of victims and establishing partnerships with civil society entities, research institutions and international organizations to strengthen the implementation of the Protocol.
In the preventive stage, the Anti-Racist Protocol provides for the development of activities such as lectures, seminars, workshops, conversation circles, external classes and related events.
“The proposed legislation recognizes the importance of partnerships with civil society, research institutions and other social bodies to strengthen the implementation of the Anti-Racist Protocol. In summary, our project aims to guarantee an educational environment that promotes values of respect, equality and appreciation of ethnic-racial diversity. Amazonas has a rich cultural history, rooted in the contributions of black and indigenous populations, and this protocol meets this context, seeking to build a more inclusive and fair future for present and future generations”,
he stated.
