The Brazilian Bia Haddad won this Sunday (7) the doubles title of the Masters 1000 in Madrid, Spain, alongside the Belarusian Victoria Azarenka. They dominated the final against American favorites Coco Gauf and Jessica Pegula, winning 2 sets to 0 (6/1 and 6/4 splits). The triumph in Madrid is the biggest in the career of Bia Haddad, who will enter the top 10 of the doubles world ranking for the first time – the São Paulo native started the tournament in 20th position. The ranking will be released by the WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) this Monday (8).
Last year, the 26-year-old from São Paulo had already stood out by winning the two main singles titles of her career – WTA 250 in Nottingham and Birmingham – in addition to runner-up in the WTA 1000 in Toronto. For her performance throughout 2022, Bia Haddad was awarded the WTA Best of the Year Award, for being the tennis player who most evolved in the season: she jumped from 82nd to 15th position.
The Brazilian is a strong candidate to represent Brazil at the 2024 Paris Olympics. The WTA ranking on June 10, 2024 will define the 28 qualified for the Olympic Games, respecting the maximum limit of four places per country. There are still three others that will be distributed by the International Tennis Federation (IFT), taking into account the results of this year’s Pan American Games in Santiago (Chile), Asian Games and African Games.
The Brazilian’s next commitment will be the Masters 1000 in Rome, starting this Monday (8). In the current season, Bia Haddad was runner-up in the doubles of the WTA 1000 in Indian Wells, after losing the final to the Czechs Barbora Krejcikova and Katerina Siniakova.
