While Messi was first in the poll among men and the Frenchman Kylian Mbappé was the second most voted, the Brazilian Neymar, partner of the two in Paris Saint-Germain (FRA), received only three votes as the first option for the best player in the world: of Messi, Thiago Silva (captain of Brazil) and Tite (former coach of the Brazilian national team).

In addition to Neymar, Messi voted for Mbappé as the second option and also for Frenchman Benzema as the third.

In all, Neymar was quoted 24 times. In addition to three first-place votes, he was nominated as the second-best in the world by the captains of Ethiopia, Malawi, Malaysia and Paraguay, and also by the journalist-nominated Solomon Islands. Another 16 voters placed the Brazilian as the third best in the world.

Vinicius Junior, from Real Madrid, also received three votes as the first option for the best in the world in the list of coaches, captains and journalists. Mohamed Salah, captain from Egypt, Emmanuel Gustave Samnick, journalist from Cameroon, and Crofton Utukana, journalist from Solomon Islands, voted for the Brazilian.

The attacker received, in all, 18 citations considering the first, second and third options of the jury.

French journalist chooses Haaland as the best in the world

Two Frenchmen took the podium alongside Messi at the Fifa awards that elected the best player in the world in 2022. While the Argentine was in first place, with 52 points in the Fifa system, Mbappé was second, with 44, and Benzema was the third, with 34.

Interestingly, neither Mbappé nor Benzema were chosen as the first choice of Christian Ollivier, the journalist chosen by FIFA to represent the French media.
