The rapporteur of the CPI (Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry) on Sports Betting, federal deputy Felipe Carreras (PSB-PE), defended the regulation of the betting market and stated that it is necessary to punish those involved in an exemplary way.
“We are going to demand that there be, as soon as possible, regulations and laws. Today we have this activity operating in a gray area, with websites hosted outside the country, the country not collecting anything. We need to collect, regulate, monitor and punish companies that are working illegally.”
Carreras said that he has already spoken with the Minister of Finance, Fernando Haddad (PT), about the regulation, and that the proposal under discussion by the Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) government can be sent to Congress via MP (Provisional Measure) or a bill law urgently.
According to him, “for the Chamber the effect is the same”. “We’re going to legislate, we’re going to approve,” he declared to the press. Carreras is the author of the application for the creation of the CPI and leader of the block of the acronym of the mayor, Arthur Lira (PP-AL), the largest in the House.
The CPI of Sports Betting gained strength in the National Congress with the Maximum Penalty operation, by the Public Ministry of Goiás, which investigates the possible manipulation of results of football matches, including the National Series A. The commission was installed this Wednesday (17) by the Chamber of Deputies.
Carreras stated that he should go to Goiânia in the next few days to talk to the Public Ministry and that the targets of the investigation should be summoned. The rapporteur also cited bookmakers and the CBF (Brazilian Football Confederation).

Federal deputy Julio Arcoverde (PP-PI), former president of River Atlético Clube, from Piauí, was elected president of the CPI. Deputy André Figueiredo (PDT-CE), leader of the PDT, will be vice-president. The first summoned by the CPI will be defined next Tuesday (23).
“This case came to light because of a Serie B game, but it has already taken on much larger proportions”, said Arcoverde. “This has to be clarified and those responsible severely punished. The CPI is opportune and appears as an instrument that will facilitate the investigation of these facts.”
The list of CPI members also includes federal deputies Eduardo Bandeira de Mello (PSB-RJ), former president of Flamengo, and Maurício do Vôlei (PL-MG), former player of the Brazilian national volleyball team. The commission is made up of 34 members and 34 substitutes.
This Wednesday, the Chamber also installed the CPIs of the MST (Movement of Landless Rural Workers) and Lojas Americanas. The three commissions are added to the mixed CPI of January 8, which has already been read, but does not yet have a date to be installed.
