Manaus (AM) – Faculdade Santa Teresa (FST) announces as coordinator of the institution’s newly created Medicine course, infectious disease doctor Bernardino Albuquerque, a reference in tropical diseases. The doctor is one of the important names in the creation of the Amazonas Tropical Medicine Foundation (FMT-AM), where he served as president-director. Bernardino was also director-president of the Health Surveillance Foundation (FVS).

The first FST Medicine class started on March 11th. The course was evaluated with a maximum score of 5 by the Ministry of Education (MEC). The pedagogical project, as explained by the general director of the college, Amanda Estald, follows the structure regulated by the MEC and has as its highlight and difference the adoption of the active teaching methodology, in which the student has contact with the practice of the profession, from the moment they enter on the course.

Bernardino Albuquerque highlights the importance of the new course. “We have a demographic void of professionals, especially in the interior of the state, where we are unable to reach the minimum number of doctors in relation to the population. The Medicine course at Santa Teresa, therefore, contributes to changing this scenario, training new professionals for the job market”, he highlighted.

A new feature, presented by Bernardino Albuquerque, are the extension activities with actions within the community, previously considered optional subjects and, currently, they are a mandatory requirement guaranteed by the Ministry of Education. “We are organizing a program at central points, to carry out extension activities, with the purpose of diagnosing and solving problems that afflict the population”, he explains.

Bernardino cites as a differentiator of the FST course, in relation to classical medical training institutions, the active and evidence-based teaching methodology, with the presence of the student, from the first semester of study, in basic health units, so that they can understand how it works, have familiarity with the cases and the community. “Learn the practice of the doctor and patient relationship,” he adds.

In this contact with practice, the coordinator advances the agreement with the Municipal Health Department (Semsa), through which students will be able to monitor and help with care, having as preceptors professionals who already work in the public service, in the areas of Medicine and Nursing. . “The level of complexity of learning is also present in these practical situations, as the student receives theoretical content to be applied in the day-to-day work of the profession”, he highlighted.

Bernardino Albuquerque has a degree in Medicine from the Federal University of Amazonas (Ufam) and a Master’s degree in Infectious and Parasitic Diseases from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ). He is a retired professor at Ufam, where he worked for 48 years, and is a professor at Fametro. In addition to being director-president of FMT and FVS, he was state undersecretary of Health and coordinator of Funasa in Amazonas.
