Manaus (AM) – With the proposal to create the State Secretariat for Indigenous Policies of Amazonas (SEPIAM), state deputy Belarmino Lins (PP) defends the need for the state to create public policies aimed at the demands of indigenous peoples, as well as the reconstruction of projects aimed at these populations.
The deputy highlighted, regarding the issue, the recent announcement by the governor of Pará, Helder Barbalho (MDB), confirming the creation of the Secretariat of Original Peoples of Pará. The State has about 55 ethnic groups and approximately 60,000 indigenous people spread over 25% of the territory of Pará, from 77 indigenous lands in 52 municipalities. The Amazon has more than 200,000 indigenous people, 168,680 of whom live in the capital, Manaus.
In the opinion of Belarmino Lins, the regrettable events observed in loco by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, last weekend, in Roraima, with the total abandonment of the Yanomami peoples, affected by malnutrition and disease, “reinforce the urgent need to create of an Indigenous Secretariat in our State”.
“What President Lula saw in Roraima shows that the indigenous problem is more than a humanitarian cause, demanding answers that will come with the secretariats to be created to placate so much drama”, says Belarmino Lins, who affirms “trusting in the sensibility of the Governor Wilson Lima to urgently send the Legislative Assembly a message announcing the creation of the Indigenous Secretariat of the Amazon”.
