The coaching staff of the Brazilian women’s basketball team defined this Wednesday (28) the 12 players who will compete in the AmeriCupW – the Women’s America Cup – starting next Saturday (July 1), in the city of León (Mexico). The debut of the team led by coach José Neto will be against Cuba, next Saturday (July 1st), at 3:10 pm. In all, 19 athletes were initially called up and had been training since the last 13th, in Araraquara (SP).
In the race for an Olympic vacancy at the Paris 2024 Games, reaching the AmeriCupW final ensures the presence of the teams in the 2024 World Pre-Olympics. Olympic Games of the Americas later this year (again, the finalists are guaranteed presence in the World Pre-Olympics).

AmeriCupW will bring together 10 selections, divided into two brackets. Brazil – bronze in the last two editions of the tournament – is in Group A, which, in addition to Cuba, has Venezuela, Argentina and the United States. Already in group B are Canada, Dominican Republic, Colombia, Mexico and Puerto Rico.
In the first round, starting on Saturday (1st), the teams compete against each other, within their own groups. The top four advance to the quarterfinals (1A x 4B, 2A x 3B, 3A x 2B, 4A x 1B), scheduled for July 7. Those who qualify will compete in the semifinals on the 8th and the title decision will be on the 9th of July.
Eyes on Paris 2024
The Olympics will bring together only 12 women’s teams. Two vacancies are already defined: one for the United States, champion of the 2022 World Cup, and another for France, as the host country. The remaining places will be distributed in the continental qualifying tournaments. There will be two four-team tournaments in both Asia and the Americas, and one six-team tournament in Africa. The champions and runners-up of each competition are guaranteed in the Pre-Olympics.
Altogether, the Pre-Olympics will bring together 16 teams from all continents. There will be four tournaments with four countries each. In the end, the top three finish off the last spots for Paris.
