Minister Luís Roberto Barroso, of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), commented on the anniversary of the beginning of the military dictatorship this Sunday (31), extolling “how valuable democracy is” after 60 years.

On a social network, Barroso commented on the date without mentioning it by name, but as an allusion to Easter Sunday.

“March 31, 2024: a day to celebrate Easter, the resurrection, the good feelings of renewal and hope, and also to remember what we can never forget: how valuable democracy is and our freedom, our rights and guarantees They are the essence of a truly dignified life in this country. Happy Easter, democracy always,” he wrote.

On another social network, Barroso stated that “in an era of so many technological advances, we still need to advance in spiritual values: good, justice, compassion and dignity for all”.

In addition to Barroso, Minister Flávio Dino also commented on the 60th anniversary of the beginning of the military dictatorship in Brazil, calling the military function “subaltern” and classifying the period as “abominable”. The statement was made amid the trial of the constitutional limits of the Armed Forces in an action before the Court.

“This vote on ADI 6457, now under trial, is delivered on a date that refers to an abominable period in our Constitutional History: 60 years ago, in defiance of the norms enshrined in the 1946 Constitution, the Rule of Law was destroyed by the illegitimate use of strength,” he wrote.
