Barroso meets with General Tomás to close an agreement between the Army and STF

The Army commander, General Tomás Paiva, had lunch with the minister and president of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), Luís Roberto Barroso, this Tuesday (23) at the Army Headquarters, in Brasília. The two also participated in a ceremony to sign a technical cooperation agreement between the STF and the Army.

A People’s Gazette found that the Army will collaborate with the STF in the area of ​​engineering and architecture to carry out works to insert clean energy in judicial facilities. The focus is on installing cells to capture solar energy, which are already used in certain military units.

In return for knowledge related to “green” construction, the STF must provide legislation training for a segment of military personnel.

This was the first time that Barroso paid a visit to the HQ as president of the STF. Despite the tense relationship between the two bodies in previous years, Barroso defends dialogue between the Powers. In recent speeches, he even made references to the Armed Forces.

During the period in which he was president of the Superior Electoral Court (TSE), Barroso invited the Armed Forces to act as monitors of the electoral process. The judge’s attitude was questioned by other Supreme Court ministers. At the time, then-president Jair Bolsonaro (PL) raised doubts about the integrity of electronic voting machines.

The relationship between the two bodies gained even more tension after the events of January 8, when protesters invaded the buildings of the Three Powers. With a series of acts of vandalism, STF ministers raised the hypothesis that Army reserve officers could be involved in the alleged organization that mobilized hundreds of people to Praça dos Três Poderes and resulted in acts of vandalism.

The tension also occurs because military personnel are being investigated by the STF, such as Lieutenant Colonel Mauro Cid, Bolsonaro’s former aide-de-camp who was arrested by order of Minister Alexandre de Moraes.
